1. Provide information on any recent books (2004-2006)
on the topic of management of electronic resources.
I began this project by
first scanning the list of databases to see which one(s) would produce the best results.
I chose three databases: Book Index with Reviews, Book Review Digest, and Books in Print.
I chose these databases because I did not want a database that specializes in periodicals. Similarly, I felt having reviews would also be helpful.
I did a basic search on
the Book Index with Reviews database. I
limited the books to English, non-fiction, and adult. I also limited the publication
date from January 2004 until October 2006. Using these limitations, a search
for the term “management of electronic systems” yielded twelve results.
After reviewing the citations, I realized that only five were actually relevant:

Next, I searched the Book Review Database. I thought it would be interesting to compare results to those found on Book
Index with Reviews. Surprising enough, using the same search terms (management
of electronic resources) and the same limitations (English, 2004-2006, etc.) yielded no results. I thought this must be some sort of mistake, given the fact that Book
Index with Review produced twelve (even though some were irrelevant). I tried alternating the search terms and using Boolean Operators, all to no avail. I decided to see what a similar search in the Books
in Print would produce.
In Books in Print, I tried an advanced search. I separated the keywords
in subject into twp groups: management and electronic resources. I limited the
format to book, the subject to nonfiction, the audience to adult/college, and the publication years to between 2004 and 2006. Once again, I yielded no results. Once
my initial moment of frustration wore off, I decided that maybe I was making this too complicated. I went back to the basic search screen and did a quick search for the keyword (phrase) “management
of electronic resources,” limiting my search to in print and forthcoming books.
This yielded sixty seven results. Unfortunately, since I had not limited
the publication year, a glance over the list revealed that only fourteen of the records were published between 2004 and 2006. Of those fourteen remaining records, only five proved to be relevant:

Before concluding this
section of the assignment, I’d like to comment on something I noticed while preparing these citations. The citations that were provided to me from the Books in Print database did not include publication city. I had to manually
look each one up. Considering this a required element to APA citation format,
should this be automatically included with each record’s information? (I
also noticed that Amazon.com does not provide a city of publication either.
2. I want to order some journal on Computers and Education and Computers in Libraries.
In order to answer this question, I searched the journal section
of the Buley library homepage using search terms like “computer”, “libraries” and “education.” By combining these terms in different ways, I was able to come up with the following
possible journal sources:

3. 3. I am updating my bibliography for my Materials and Services for Adults course for Fall
2006. I need a list of five articles relevant to the course published in 2004-2006.
I began this search on
the Buley homepage. From the database section, I chose Library Science”
as the category that I was researching. This provided me with the Library Literature database. I varied my key words in order to come
with the appropriate sources. For example, I used the search terms “adults
and learning” and “adult education.” I noticed that sometimes the keyword “adult” actually produced
topics on “young adults.” By varying my search terms, I was
able to come up with the following list of sources:
Lawson,
K. G. (2005) Using eclectic
digital resources to enhance instructional methods for adult learners. OCLC Systems & Services, 21(1), 49-60.
Moyer,
J. E. (2005, Spring). Adult fiction reading: A literature review of reader’s
advisory services, adult
fiction librarianship, and fiction readers. Reference & User Services Quarterly,
44(3), 220-6, 229-31.

4.
I need information on the American Association of School Librarians.
My search for this information began on the Buley Library
database page. In the box labeled “My research is in,” I selected
Library Science. This would enable me to see a list of databases that pertaining
to the related field of study. Once I had my list of databases, I chose Academic
Research Premier, in part because it was affiliated with EBSCO. From EBSCO, I
then conducted a search for “American Association of School and Librarians.”
One article that immediately caught my attention was Library
NEWS. Since it was available in full text, I clicked on the link to direct me
to the article. The article contained information about the AASL and seeking
proposals for 2007. I was pleased to see a direct link to the AASL homepage in
the article (http://www.aasl.org), as I figured this would provide me with the specific information I needed.
From the AASL homepage I was able to find the following
information:
